Berney’s litigation practice includes commercial and business disputes, product liability, and personal injury. He has successfully represented media clients in Federal and State Court trials in defense of defamation and invasion of privacy claims. He has won numerous trials for major national and local manufacturing companies in defending product liability claims. He represents banks and has won trials defending against lender liability claims. His litigation clients include insurance companies, real estate agencies and insurance agents. Berney also has a significant personal injury practice on behalf of accident victims. He has successfully defended Maine law firms in legal malpractice claims. Berney has also developed a niche practice representing injured skiers in ski area liability litigation. His clients include national and statewide businesses, insurance companies, individuals and self-insured entities in both the United States and Canada.

Berney frequently lectures to legal, business and media groups on a variety of aspects of civil litigation, defamation and how to avoid legal malpractice claims. He regularly engages in trials in state and federal courts. Berney has chaired the Maine Bar Association’s Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution. In recognition of his legal skills and professionalism, Berney has received an AV® Preeminent Peer Review Rating in the distinguished legal directory, Martindale-Hubbell®.
